Our Haircare Must-Haves

Today, we're tackling everything hair! We each have very different hair types, so we hope between the two of us we cover the gamut here. We've also each done a fair share of damage to our locks and learned some lessons the hard way, so we hope that by sharing our tried-and-true favorites, we can spare you some headache.

Also, be sure to check out our skincare and makeup must-haves as well!

Molly's Picks

A little bit about my hair: it is suuuuper fine. I have a lot of it, but the strands are incredibly fine. Like, when most people braid pigtails, one of those is the size of my single braid. So, I've found some great products to pump it up and add some volume, as well as give it some texture. I've dyed my hair basically since I was 16, so I'm also concerned about products that keep it healthy as well, especially after bleaching it to get the pastel pink color. Btw, if you need a colorist in Kansas City, give Sam at Hair Salon a shout, she is a wizard!

1. Iso Daily Spray Wax
This stuff is a lifesaver with any updo or braids. When you have fine hair like mine that doesn't stay for anything, a spritz of this gives tons of texture and makes everything stay put all day long. I don't know how I ever braided my hair without it.

2. Redken Pillow Proof Primer
Pillow Proof Primer is game-changer. It not only cuts your blow drying time significantly, it also serves as a heat protector, so you're getting two for the price of one here. I honestly didn't know how it could really cut down hair prep time, but there must be some magic in it, because it absolutely does.

3. Umberto Lifting Powder
Again, with very fine hair, my hair has zero lift and just sort of hangs off my scalp with no body, especially when I use shampoos and conditioners that add lots of hydration and shine. A few shakes of this around my part and my hair perks right up. If you wish your hair had more body, this is going to be your best friend.

4. Garnier Anti-Frizz Serum
I can't imagine getting out of the shower and not applying a pump of this serum with argan oil. It adds shine and makes brushing through wet hair easier, eliminating tangles and frizz.

5. Viral Colorwash Shampoo
If you color your hair any pastel or bright color, you NEED Viral Colorwash Shampoo. Pastel color doesn't have great staying power and this stuff has been a lifesaver for me. I only get my hair colored every 12 weeks or so, I just use this every other time I wash my hair and it deposits enough color to keep up my rosy hue. It comes in a variety of colors too!

6. Nexxus Hydrating Mask
This small but mighty mask packs a punch. It's only a few dollars and this packet lasts me about 4 washes. I try to use this in place of conditioner once a week or every other week, and my hair comes out silky smooth and feeling great without being weighted down.

7. Wet Brush
This brush does exactly what it's called: it's made for brushing your hair while wet, which typically is pretty damaging. The tines are very flexible, so it keeps your hair from breaking and getting strained. It's been so great, I now use it as my primary hairbrush as well.

8. Jose Eber Curling Wand
With such fine hair, I've tried a lot of curling irons to make even a bit of curl stay in my hair, but this curling iron is where I struck gold. The high temp and ceramic finish keeps curls in my hair, sometimes for two full days.

Jodi's Picks
I feel like I should preface my hair care essentials picks with a little blurb about my hair history. My hair has literally been every color under the sun, as well as every length. I've been pretty hard on it recently, so with the help of my awesome hair stylist (thanks Mark!) I am getting it back to a super healthy and strong state. Check out what I am using to make sure my hair is as healthy as it can be below!

I recently went platinum blonde and this purple shampoo and conditioner is a lifesaver. It keeps the brassiness out and maintains my blonde ash throughout the 7-8 weeks before my next hair appointment. I only wash my hair every 4-5 days, so one large bottle of each lasts me quite some time.

As I mentioned, I am currently working on getting my hair back to a super healthy and happy state. My hair stylist introduced me to these great Paul Mitchell products (this one and the next two) over the past few months. This protectant spray is a superb thermal protectant, plus it can be used as a very lightweight hairspray! It also happens to smell amazing!

I use this in conjunction with the spray above when I want a little extra hold.

This stuff is insane! Fist of all, it smells amazing. Second, it makes your hair SO shiny without weighing it down at all! I spray it on before blow drying, and also on my ends every other day. It helps to rebuild breakage and makes your hair super soft!

To get the waves in my short hair, I use a tapered curling wand. I love this kind because it's very cost effective, but also works great!

Not only is this blow dryer pretty to look at, it also cuts my drying time in half, all the while making my hair super shiny!

I have pretty thick hair, so I need a brush that can really grab ahold of it, while still being gentle. I love these bristle brushes because they also make my hair shiny! I use the flat brush on my short cut to maintain the blunt edges and a round brush when I feel like going for a sleek, straight look with volume and curled under ends.

Out of everything on this list, I haven't tried this yet, but I am purchasing some as we speak! I really need an intensive hair conditioning mask and have heard great things about this one for bleached hair. I will let you know how I like it soon!

Since my hair is so thick, I normally have to divide it up into 3-4 sections when blow drying it AND curling or straightening it. I love these clips because they are easy to clip the sections of hair up and out of the way. They also hold a lot of hair and keep everything in place while you work!
